In that corner of the world, where the green of the coffee plantations blends with the blue of the sky and the air is as fresh as the rustling of the leaves, Juan Felipe Ocampo walked through the estate he had transformed with his passion and determination. The estate, now known as La Reserva, was not always like this. There was a time when the land lay forgotten, like a secret well-kept by the jungle that surrounded it, and the coffee that was once grown there had lost its way.

But Juan Felipe’s vision was clear, like the water flowing down from the mountains. When he bought La Reserva in early 2018, the outlook was bleak. The estate lay in ruins, the coffee plantations had been neglected, and the former owners, brought to their knees by the coffee crisis, lacked the resources to carry on. However, Juan Felipe saw neither ruins nor desolation, but a unique opportunity: fertile land, at over 1,800 metres above sea level, where conditions were perfect for creating a speciality coffee—one that could tell a story, one that spoke of the land, of hard work, and of an unwavering love for what he did.

The estate had been shaped by generations of traditional coffee farmers, but Juan Felipe did not simply want to grow coffee; he wanted to produce something exceptional, a coffee that represented the best of Colombia, the best of Antioquia. He knew that the secret lay not only in the soil, but in the care with which he would cultivate every bean, in his respect for the nature that surrounded him, and in his commitment to quality above all else.

La Reserva is a magical place, not only for the coffee it produces, but for its indissoluble bond with nature. Over 70% of the estate, some 340 hectares, is protected as a nature reserve. There, amidst the whisper of the wind and the song of the birds, unique species dwell, such as the Andean bear, known as the spectacled bear, which moves stealthily amongst the trees, or the multicoloured butterflies that dance in the cool morning breeze. There are also snakes, frogs and monkeys which, like invisible guardians, watch over the biodiversity surrounding the coffee plantations. It is a land that beats to the rhythm of life, a place where life and coffee coexist in harmony.

Juan Felipe, who had grown up in Ciudad Bolívar, one of Antioquia’s main coffee-growing regions, understood that quality coffee is not just a product, but an experience. And, to achieve this, every step had to be approached with passion, from cultivation to harvest, including the manual selection of the beans. He knew that every sip of coffee had to capture the essence of La Reserva: the purity of the mountain air, the richness of the soil and, of course, the dedication of its people.

Every morning, Juan Felipe would walk his lands with the same dedication as in the beginning, when success was still far from certain. In the coffee plantations, the pickers would hand-select only the ripe cherries—those which, when brushed with the fingers, revealed the exact point of sweetness and concentration of flavour. The beans then underwent a meticulous washing and drying process, all in harmony with the rhythm of the surrounding nature. The estate, though young, had begun to bear fruit, and this was not limited to coffee: the land was regenerating, the ecosystem was flourishing, and La Reserva was becoming an example of what is possible when you love what you do.

Over time, the coffee born at La Reserva began to gain recognition. Connoisseurs and tasters began to talk about it, not only for its unique flavour, but for its story: a coffee that was not just the fruit of the earth, but of a man who believed in the possibility of the impossible. Juan Felipe had always said: “When you have passion and love for what you do, anything is possible”, and that creed was reflected in every bean that leaves La Reserva.

La Reserva coffee captures the height of the Antioquia mountains in every sip. Its acidity is bright, like the freshness of the misty mornings that envelop the estate, yet it also has body, a creamy touch that evokes the warmth of the earth. The floral, fruity and slightly sweet notes are like the whisper of butterflies alighting on the coffee trees, whilst a hint of dark chocolate gives it a long, satisfying finish, like the echo of an embrace. It is a coffee that transports you, inviting you to close your eyes and let yourself be enveloped by the magic of La Reserva.

The story of this coffee does not end with the beans or the harvesting process. It lives on in every person who savours it, in every sip that awakens the senses, in every cup that tells the story of a farm saved by one man’s passion and love for nature. Because, ultimately, La Reserva coffee is not just a drink. It is an encounter with the land, with dreams, with the efforts of those who believe that when coffee is grown with soul, it is capable of awakening something much greater within us.

Today, as Juan Felipe gazes at the horizon from the heights of his land, with a calm smile, he knows he has achieved something that seemed impossible.
